Botox vs. Filler: What’s the Difference?

4 min read

If you are new to injectables, it can feel like everyone speaks a different language. Two names come up over and over again: Botox and filler. They are both injectable treatments, but they do very different jobs.

At Lumina Aesthetics in Raleigh, we use these tools in a measured, natural-looking way. The goal is not to change your face—it is to soften or refine what already suits you.

What Botox-Type Neurotoxins Do

When we say “Botox” in casual conversation, we are usually talking about neuromodulators—medications that temporarily soften muscle movement. We use them most often for:

  • frown lines between the brows
  • horizontal forehead lines
  • crow’s feet around the eyes

When you raise your brows or squint, certain muscles contract and fold the skin. Over time, those folds can remain even at rest. By reducing how strongly those muscles contract, neuromodulators soften the lines that show when you move.

You should still be able to express yourself. At Lumina, we use conservative dosing and placement so you look rested, not frozen.

What Dermal Filler Does

Dermal filler is a gel that adds volume or structure. It does not affect muscle. Instead, we use it to:

  • restore volume in cheeks or temples
  • refine the chin or jawline
  • soften folds around the mouth
  • add shape and definition to lips

As we age, bone, fat, and soft tissue shift. This can leave the face looking flatter or more shadowed. Filler can gently return support where it has been lost. Product choice, placement, and amount all matter; subtlety goes a long way.

Botox vs. Filler: Which Addresses What?

Think of neuromodulators as addressing motion and filler as addressing structure:

  • Movement lines (for example, “11s” between the brows when you frown) → usually neuromodulator.
  • Volume loss (for example, cheeks that look flatter) → usually filler.
  • Some concerns, such as lines at rest that were once only present with movement, may benefit from a thoughtful combination.

How We Help You Decide

You do not need to decide between Botox and filler on your own. During a consultation we:

  • listen to what bothers you most in the mirror or photos
  • assess how your face moves and where volume has shifted
  • explain which tools make sense, in what order, and why

Sometimes the answer is “just neurotoxin” or “just a small amount of filler.” Sometimes we outline a stepwise plan over time. We will also talk openly about cost and realistic timelines.

Our Approach at Lumina

We do not chase trends or dramatic transformations. We prefer measured, incremental change that respects your features and lifestyle. If we do not think an injectable is right for you—or if we believe you are asking for more than will look natural—we will say so.

At the end of your visit, you should have a clear understanding of why we recommend Botox, filler, both, or neither, and you should feel no pressure to decide before you are ready.
